Addressing India’s Pressing National Identity Documentation Woes: JDMR in Delhi
New Delhi (India), May 24: Availing national identification documents in India presents significant challenges due to systemic complexities and widespread unawareness of procedures among the populace. Despite government efforts to streamline processes, many citizens face obstacles in obtaining crucial documents like Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, driving licenses, voter ID cards, and passports, etc. Lengthy wait times, stringent documentation requirements, and limited accessibility to enrollment centers particularly affect rural residents, exacerbating financial exclusion and impeding access to essential services.
Globally, the World Economic Forum reports that about one billion people struggle to verify their identities, hindering access to vital services such as banking, mobile accounts, and travel. Additionally, three billion lack the necessary identification for participation in the digital economy, limiting their engagement in online transactions and access to government services.
“India’s national identity documents, such as Aadhaar and the Voter ID card, symbolize the government’s efforts to streamline identity verification processes, empower citizens, and foster digital inclusion in the country’s development journey,” says Vansh Jain, founder of S2F Services Pvt Ltd.
India’s Aadhaar: A Significant Milestone in Country’s Digital Growth Journey
The Aadhaar program, established in 2009, offers a robust digital identity system linking a unique 12-digit number to biometric data, facilitating access to government and business services.
Statistical findings by Statista.com reveal that in the fiscal year 2023 alone, over 36.9 million Aadhaar cards were generated, contributing to a cumulative total of over 1.3 billion cards issued since inception. This biometric-linked ID system has become integral to various aspects of Indian life, from accessing government subsidies and pensions to participating in financial markets.
Aadhaar’s significance extends to facilitating direct benefit transfers and ensuring transparent governance through linkages with PAN cards, bank accounts, and mobile phones. It has streamlined processes such as e-KYC and digital payments, fostering transparency and accountability in transactions.
UIDAI findings released in September 2023 highlight the extensive usage of Aadhaar, with over 765.30 million residents linking it with ration cards and over 284.40 million linking it with cooking gas connections for subsidies. Additionally, more than 788 million Aadhaar numbers have been uniquely linked with bank accounts.
Blue Aadhar Card for Children under 5 years old
Recognizing evolving needs, Aadhaar introduced the Blue Aadhaar card for children under five, enabling parents to obtain a digital identity without biometric data. The UID is processed using demographic details and parent-linked photographs, simplifying enrollment with a birth certificate or hospital discharge slip.

On one hand, there’s the paramount importance of privacy, ensuring that personal information of individuals remains safeguarded; while on the other, there’s a pressing need for government accountability, ensuring that this data is used responsibly and transparently.
